{"id":5724,"date":"2013-07-11T15:08:52","date_gmt":"2013-07-11T19:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iheartblank.net\/old\/?p=5724"},"modified":"2017-08-12T06:42:59","modified_gmt":"2017-08-12T06:42:59","slug":"google-and-penguin-2-0-back-me-up-on-blogging-and-seo-optimization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iheartblank.net\/old\/google-and-penguin-2-0-back-me-up-on-blogging-and-seo-optimization\/","title":{"rendered":"Google and Penguin 2.0 Back Me Up On Blogging And SEO Optimization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>Google&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0<em>new algorithm<\/em>\u00a0for delivering search results. \u00a0It delivers a bunch of updates to how Google ranks websites on the world-wide web. \u00a0The funny thing is that the\u00a0<strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0update is utilizing things that I&#8217;ve been talking about for a while. \u00a0The first time we talked about\u00a0<a href=\"\/9-marketing-tips-for-facebook-and-twitter-if-youre-sincere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being sincere with your online presence<\/a>. \u00a0Then I showed you some\u00a0<a title=\"Report Proves The Importance Of Blogging\" href=\"\/report-proves-the-importance-of-blogging-plus-tips-for-maintaining-your-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">important stats<\/a>\u00a0about the benefits of blogging. \u00a0Then we talked about the\u00a0<a title=\"11 (More) Reasons Your Local Business Should Be Blogging\" href=\"\/11-more-reasons-your-local-business-should-be-blogging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">importance of local businesses who blog<\/a>. \u00a0Heck! \u00a0I even gave you some\u00a0<a title=\"Tips And Inspiration For Writing Your Next Blog Post \/ Article\" href=\"\/tips-and-ideas-for-writing-your-next-blog-post-article\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tips &amp; inspiration for posting to your website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So what I&#8217;m going to do in this article is go over my philosophy of SEO, we&#8217;ll define some terms and finally talk about what changes have come with Penguin 2.0. \u00a0Let&#8217;s get into it&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How I Utilize SEO<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>People ask me about\u00a0<strong>SEO<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>SEO related things<\/strong>\u00a0all the time. \u00a0My rebuttal \/ philosophy usually involved\u00a0<strong>two<\/strong>\u00a0very important themes&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Social Media Is Important<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first thing I talk about is\u00a0<strong>social media<\/strong>. \u00a0Part of why it&#8217;s important is\u00a0<strong><em>connecting with your audience as many ways as possible<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0For example, if you have the newer\u00a0<strong>Maps App<\/strong>\u00a0for your\u00a0<strong>iPhone<\/strong>\u00a0you may be surprised to know that it utilizes\u00a0<strong>Yelp<\/strong>\u00a0for business locations (or at least their rating.) \u00a0And as we all know; hits to your page helps you rank higher with search engines.<\/p>\n<p>The second part is totally\u00a0<em>search engine relevant<\/em>. \u00a0Okay, so let&#8217;s say you search a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=ben+kenney&amp;oq=ben+kenney&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i57j5j0l2j69i60j69i62.1611j0&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">band<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>Google\u00a0<\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=communication+redlight&amp;oq=communication+redlight&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i65l2j69i60j0l2.3571j0&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">example 1<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=the+scandals+nj&amp;oq=the+scandals+nj&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i57j0l3j69i62l2.3268j0&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">example 2<\/a>.) \u00a0If you look at the top search results you&#8217;ll see that they are actually\u00a0<strong>social media websites!<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0How crazy is that! \u00a0If you look up a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=i+heart+blank&amp;oq=i+heart+blank&amp;aqs=chrome.0.69i59l2j69i60l3j69i65.2051j0&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">business<\/a>\u00a0you&#8217;ll see the same applies. \u00a0Why is this? \u00a0Exactly for the same reason we stated above; \u00a0hits to a page helps the rank in search engines. \u00a0Except this time it&#8217;s looking at\u00a0<em>insanely\u00a0high traffic pages<\/em>\u00a0(like\u00a0<strong>Facebook<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Twitter<\/strong>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<strong>Yelp,<\/strong>) matching those up to the\u00a0<em>search term<\/em>\u00a0(aka &#8211; your business name) and displaying those results first.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>We Are The &#8220;Product&#8221; of [INSERT SEARCH ENGINE HERE]<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I also tell people who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Google<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<em>(or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bing.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bing<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/yahooo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Yahoo<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or anyone else)<\/em>\u00a0actually\u00a0<strong>wants your business at the top of their organic search results<\/strong>. \u00a0I sometimes get a weird look from people, but the fact of the matter is that\u00a0<strong>we are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webpronews.com\/consumer-watchdog-says-we-are-googles-product-2012-06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google&#8217;s\u00a0<em>product<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and not their\u00a0<em>customers<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think this is a negative thing, but it&#8217;s important to recognize the difference. \u00a0Google&#8217;s\u00a0<em><strong>customer<\/strong><\/em>, as with any business, is someone who spends money with a company. \u00a0You\u00a0<strong>do\u00a0<em>not<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0spend money with\u00a0<strong>Google<\/strong>\u00a0<em>(at least while you&#8217;re searching for content.)<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0To put it the simplest, it&#8217;s the people who spend money on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/adwords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Adwords<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<em>(paid search results)<\/em>\u00a0who are\u00a0<strong>Google&#8217;s\u00a0<em>customers<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0<strong>You<\/strong>\u00a0are the\u00a0<em><strong>product<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0that Google can sell to their\u00a0<strong>Adword<\/strong>\u00a0<em><strong>customers<\/strong><\/em>. \u00a0So, in essence, they tell an\u00a0<strong>Adword<\/strong>\u00a0<em><strong>customer,\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;We have 3,000 who search &#8216;Term X&#8217;\u00a0an hour&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and that\u00a0<strong>IS<\/strong>\u00a0their\u00a0<strong>sales pitch<\/strong>. \u00a0That&#8217;s why you are the\u00a0<em><strong>product<\/strong><\/em>! \u00a0That&#8217;s why\u00a0<em><strong>customers<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0prefer to utilize\u00a0<em><strong>Google Adwords<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0over any other search engine. \u00a0<strong>They have the highest numbers<\/strong>. \u00a0Plus,\u00a0<strong>Google<\/strong>\u00a0actually turned their business name into a verb (&#8220;<em>Google It<\/em>&#8220;!) \u00a0Whether it was intentional or not that&#8217;s some\u00a0<strong>brilliant marketing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, if Google is using\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0as vehicle to make money; how would they potentially start loosing money? By having less and less\u00a0<em><strong>product<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to sell (<em>and remember you are the product.<\/em>) \u00a0How would they potentially start loosing\u00a0<em><strong>product<\/strong><\/em>? \u00a0By sucking at having relevant search engine results. \u00a0Worst case scenario is searching a business name on Google and having all pornography come up. \u00a0How popular do you think\u00a0<strong>Bing<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Yahoo<\/strong>\u00a0would get if this started happening? \u00a0Google would probably drop pretty quickly from the top search engine. \u00a0 This also means that\u00a0<strong>Google<\/strong>\u00a0is (and should be) working hard to bring you relevant search results. \u00a0<strong>AKA &#8211; Google wants your business on top of organic results!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So if you&#8217;re just being honest and doing what you should be doing as a business than Google wants to at the top&#8230;at least organically. \u00a0This is where\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Penguin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0comes in, but before we get to that let&#8217;s go over some basics of how it all works&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>SEO Definitions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s define some terms so we can all get along. \u00a0If you all ready know about these definitions and terms then you&#8217;re welcome to skip this section.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Penguin<\/strong>\u00a0is the clever littler term\u00a0<strong>Google<\/strong>\u00a0came up with for their\u00a0<em>algorithm<\/em>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>search engine results<\/em>. \u00a0According to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Penguin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Google Penguin<\/b>\u00a0is a code name\u00a0for a\u00a0Google algorithm\u00a0update that was first announced on April 24, 2012. The update is aimed at decreasing search engine rankings of websites that violate Google\u2019s Webmaster Guidelines\u00a0by using now declared\u00a0black-hat SEO\u00a0techniques, such as\u00a0keyword stuffing,\u00a0cloaking,\u00a0participating in link schemes,\u00a0deliberate creation of\u00a0duplicate content,\u00a0and others. Unlike\u00a0PageRank, however, Google makes all updates to this algorithm public.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\"><br \/>\n<\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Panda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Google Panda<\/strong><\/a>, but that doesn&#8217;t really have to do with the most reason updates. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/socialmediatoday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Social Media Today<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0explains\u00a0why these changes are important:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As usual, when there is a Google algorithm update business owners have to stop whatever it is they were doing and focus on the update. A penguin or panda update can mean big changes for a website, so you have to always be prepared, informed, and ready to react and recover. \u00a0Google is constantly making algorithm changes in order to improve the results that show up on a SERP, and whether you agree with the change or not, Google is the one that gets to decide if you\u2019re on page 1 or page 10.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Essentially,\u00a0<strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0is trying \/ looking to alleviate and deter\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_hat_seo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Black Hat SEO<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Black Hat SEO<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Black Hat SEO<\/strong>\u00a0are sometimes termed as &#8216;<em>unfair<\/em>&#8216; practices in\u00a0<strong>SEO optimization<\/strong>. \u00a0Some I agree with while others I just see as tips for sincere bloggers to get a step above the rest. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_hat_seo\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0defines\u00a0<strong>Black Hat SEO<\/strong>\u00a0as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>is the deliberate manipulation of\u00a0search engine indexes. It involves a number of methods, such as repeating unrelated phrases, to manipulate the relevance or prominence of resources indexed in a manner inconsistent with the purpose of the indexing system.\u00a0It could be considered to be a part of\u00a0search engine optimization, though there are many search engine optimization methods that improve the quality and appearance of the content of web sites and serve content useful to many users.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pushon.co.uk\/articles\/top-5-white-hat-and-black-hat-search-optimisation-techniques\/\"><strong>Push On<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/computer.howstuffworks.com\/search-engine-optimization3.htm\"><strong>How Stuff Works<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Black Hat SEO<\/strong>\u00a0practices include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Page stuffing<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Link Farming<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Keyword Stuffing<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hidden Content<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Meta Description<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Meta Keywords<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Gateway Pages<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>White Hat SEO<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>White Hat SEO<\/strong>\u00a0are the &#8216;clean&#8217;\u00a0<strong>SEO optimization techniques<\/strong>\u00a0that Google is actually looking for. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_hat_(computer_security)\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0defines\u00a0<strong>White Hat SEO<\/strong>\u00a0as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The term &#8220;<b>white hat<\/b>&#8221; in\u00a0Internet slang\u00a0refers to an ethical\u00a0computer hacker, or a\u00a0computer security\u00a0expert, who specializes in\u00a0penetration testing\u00a0and in other testing methodologies to ensure the security of an organization&#8217;s\u00a0information systems.Ethical hacking\u00a0is a term coined by\u00a0IBM\u00a0meant to imply a broader category than just penetration testing.\u00a0White-hat hackers may also work in teams called &#8220;sneakers&#8221;,red teams, or\u00a0tiger teams.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>White Hat SEO<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pushon.co.uk\/articles\/top-5-white-hat-and-black-hat-search-optimisation-techniques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">techniques<\/a>\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Quality Content<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Structural Mark Up<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Titles and Meta Data<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Effect Keyword Use<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What&#8217;s The Deal With Penguin 2.0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve defined some of our terms, let&#8217;s dig a little deeper in what\u00a0<strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0is actually doing. \u00a0<strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0focuses a lot on anti-spam search results. \u00a0<strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0is actually\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/realbigmarketing.com\/2013\/05\/matt-cutts-outlines-10-points-designed-to-kill-black-hat-marketing-in-penguin-2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geared towards small \/ medium-sized businesses<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>anti-spam search results<\/strong>. \u00a0Google is actually looking to get\u00a0<em>more specific, genuine content higher in the search engines, organically<\/em>. \u00a0Google wants to keep out spam, while making it easier for the &#8216;regular&#8217; business person \/ blogger to rank higher in Google. \u00a0Back in May 2013,\u00a0<strong>Matt Cutts<\/strong>\u00a0put out a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattcutts.com\/blog\/what-to-expect-in-seo-in-the-coming-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a>\u00a0highlighting what to expect with the changes. \u00a0So let&#8217;s take a look, based on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattcutts.com\/blog\/what-to-expect-in-seo-in-the-coming-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a>\u00a0and other sources (below), at what\u00a0<strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0is bringing to the table,\u00a0some of the ways you can make\u00a0<strong>Penguin 2.0<\/strong>\u00a0work for you and some things you may want to look out for.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How To Get Higher Rankings With Penguin<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Being an authority of your business type<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I feel like I&#8217;ve been talking about this from day one and how important it is for any business, regardless of its website implications. \u00a0I&#8217;ve talked about <a href=\"http:\/\/tomduhamel.com\/business-marketing\/2012\/11\/tips-and-inspiration-for-writing-your-next-blog-post-article\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;being an authority&#8217; as a tip to writing articles<\/a>\u00a0and I&#8217;ve talked about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tomduhamel.com\/business-marketing\/2011\/12\/the-message-is-not-the-medium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being an authority when you&#8217;re positioning your business<\/a>\u00a0in the first place! \u00a0Now, Google&#8217;s catching on&#8230;and for\u00a0<em>good<\/em>,\u00a0<em>logical<\/em>\u00a0<em>reasoning<\/em>. \u00a0If you&#8217;re the authority on your business-type then you are presenting\u00a0<em>relevant, knowledgable information<\/em>\u00a0about your product or service and guess what&#8230;.<strong>Google wants you on top!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Creating targeted content at a specific audience<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This one is somewhat related to &#8216;<em>being an authority&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0but it also has other implications. \u00a0I started writing an article yesterday (which I never finished) about how when you&#8217;re advertising something you need to focus on just one thing and not just give a laundry list of services you do. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Mostly because of people&#8217;s attention spans, but also because<strong>\u00a0you should know a lot of information about one thing<\/strong>\u00a0and you should tell people\u00a0<strong>all<\/strong>\u00a0the features of\u00a0<strong>one product<\/strong>, not\u00a0<strong>zero<\/strong>\u00a0features about\u00a0<strong>all your products<\/strong>. \u00a0Google&#8217;s catching up on this one too. \u00a0When you search something like,\u00a0<em>&#8220;How do I properly cook Brussel Sprouts&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Google should know that you don&#8217;t want a page titled\u00a0<em>&#8220;How To Cook Fruits and Vegetables.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0They know you&#8217;re looking for specific thing and they want to deliver that specific content (remember that you are Google&#8217;s product.)<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Social Media buzz and Social Media links<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Google<\/strong>\u00a0is also going to be looking more about how your share your\u00a0<em>specific, authoritative content<\/em>. \u00a0What does that mean? \u00a0Your\u00a0<strong>social networks<\/strong>! \u00a0Google will start looking at the\u00a0<em>buzz<\/em>\u00a0of your content on\u00a0<strong>social media<\/strong>\u00a0as well as using social media to prove you are an\u00a0<em>authority<\/em>\u00a0on the content. \u00a0Think about it. \u00a0If you&#8217;re posting on a BS site you&#8217;re just trying to make money from then you may not spend the time or energy to build up a\u00a0<strong>Facebook Page<\/strong>\u00a0or a\u00a0<strong>Twitter Account<\/strong>. \u00a0If you&#8217;re seamlessly pushing your content\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0interacting with your social media sites then you&#8217;re more &#8216;<em>authentic<\/em>&#8216; and Google can make a pretty good guesstimate that you&#8217;re not trying to be an ass-face.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How To Avoid Downrankings and Penalties<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Making your site more secure<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Google will now start looking at your\u00a0<em>comment links, paid links, etc<\/em>\u00a0to determine if your site has\u00a0<em>quality content<\/em>. \u00a0Make sure you\u00a0<strong>delete SPAM<\/strong>\u00a0from your blog and make sure the site is using more\u00a0<strong>White Hat techniques<\/strong>\u00a0than\u00a0<strong>Black Hat<\/strong>\u00a0ones.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>If it&#8217;s an advertorial, make sure it&#8217;s known!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>An\u00a0<em><strong>advertorial<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0is really a\u00a0<strong>sales pitch<\/strong>\u00a0disguised as an\u00a0<strong>article, blog entry<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>testimonial<\/strong>. \u00a0Google is focusing on weeding out the advertorials that are utilized for page ranking. \u00a0<strong>Matt Cutts<\/strong>\u00a0does\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mattcutts.com\/blog\/what-to-expect-in-seo-in-the-coming-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state<\/a>\u00a0that Google &#8216;<em>sees nothing wrong with advertorials<\/em>&#8216; (in essence, you&#8217;re welcome to make money off your site using them) but you should not be using it for\u00a0<em>search engine optimization<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Link Farming Will Hurt You More Than Ever<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You should always try to link to authoritative sites and not just have links that you think with boost your SEO. \u00a0When you&#8217;re defining something, link to Wikipedia! \u00a0It&#8217;s good for you. \u00a0But if you are linking to a bunch of Russian websites that are filled with rich search terms then you might be in trouble. \u00a0Using quality\u00a0<em>backlinks<\/em>\u00a0will take more time, but it will also ensure that you&#8217;re doing it right the first time.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Over Optimization<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As I stated earlier, Google is trying to find quality content for search results, not just\u00a0<em>well-optimized sites<\/em>. \u00a0If you try to over-do it with optimization, then Google&#8217;s going to try to catch you. \u00a0They&#8217;ll catch ya good!
