{"id":5556,"date":"2013-04-16T12:28:36","date_gmt":"2013-04-16T16:28:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iheartblank.net\/old\/?p=5556"},"modified":"2017-08-12T06:13:08","modified_gmt":"2017-08-12T06:13:08","slug":"intent-precedes-content-keeping-customers-at-the-core","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iheartblank.net\/old\/intent-precedes-content-keeping-customers-at-the-core\/","title":{"rendered":"Intent Precedes Content &#8211; Keeping Customers At The Core"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I started writing this article and I went on so many different &#8216;side rants&#8217; that I decided to break them up into a &#8216;series&#8217; of posts about how closely knit being in a band is with &#8216;the business world.&#8217; \u00a0Here&#8217;s part two&#8230; (Go\u00a0<a title=\"Your Fans Are The Reason You\u2019re In Business\" href=\"\/your-fans-are-the-reason-youre-in-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0for part one)<\/p>\n<h2>Let&#8217;s Talk About Music<\/h2>\n<p>You know there&#8217;s a few interactions I&#8217;ve had over the past few weeks that got me thinking about my\u00a0<strong>business relationships<\/strong>. \u00a0It started, as usual, over music. \u00a0Music, and the business of music, is the most honest form of business. \u00a0Mostly because it&#8217;s not considered a &#8216;<em>real<\/em>&#8216; business.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of bands I&#8217;ve played with over the years who don&#8217;t play music that I\u00a0particularly\u00a0like. \u00a0They&#8217;re talented doods, but it&#8217;s just not my style. \u00a0It&#8217;s like if I listened to\u00a0<strong>Hip Hop<\/strong>\u00a0and they played\u00a0<strong>Country<\/strong>\u00a0music. \u00a0Often times these are the same bands that I will go out of my way to see. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Because they&#8217;re awesome guys who are really good at what they play and I enjoy supporting them and watching them do what they&#8217;re passionate about. \u00a0I&#8217;ve also seen my share of bands who are a little cocky and arrogant when it comes to shows. \u00a0They show up, don&#8217;t watch the bands and are ultimately concerned with themselves and their &#8216;performance.&#8217; \u00a0These are the same guys I tend not to go out of my way to see.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not in a band, or haven&#8217;t been to a &#8216;local&#8217; or bar show in a while, you can still relate this to the &#8216;bigger&#8217; guys, because most of it translates &#8216;on the big screen.&#8217; \u00a0You hear typical stories about some Rock (or Pop) Star doing something for the fans or helping out after a natural disaster and it&#8217;s the same idea. \u00a0You see some musicians really working overtime to still have a &#8216;connection&#8217; with their fans while other people really just look at it as a job and couldn&#8217;t care less. \u00a0Their ego&#8217;s tell them that their fans are &#8216;privileged\u00a0to be able to witness their talent&#8217; instead of knowing they wouldn&#8217;t be there without the fans. \u00a0There should always be a mutual respect.<\/p>\n<h2>Let&#8217;s Talk About Your Business&#8217; Sincerity!<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been in the\u00a0<strong>&#8216;business world&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0(Boy do I hate saying that) for about half of the time I&#8217;ve been involved in music, but there is no doubt in my mind that I have the same\u00a0<strong>ethics\/mindset\/whatever-you-wanna-call-it<\/strong>\u00a0for both\u00a0<strong>music<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>business<\/strong>. \u00a0I like to help support businesses that have the same mindset as me. \u00a0<strong>I like to help support businesses that I think are\u00a0sincere.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Businesses that don&#8217;t\u00a0<em>think<\/em>&#8230;but actually\u00a0<em><strong>believe<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0they can help someone with their product or service.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, when someone asks you to recommend a service\/business, chances are you recommend someone you believe is a sincere business person. \u00a0A person with\u00a0<strong>passion<\/strong>. \u00a0To be honest, when someone asks me to recommend someone always makes me\u00a0<strong>feel good<\/strong>. \u00a0It means they\u00a0<strong>trust me<\/strong>\u00a0to help them make the right decision and, to a certain extent, they believe I&#8217;m\u00a0<strong>sincere<\/strong>. \u00a0I remember my boss telling me a story from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accidentalsalesperson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chris Lytle<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(and I&#8217;m paraphrasing, at best) that there are levels of trust with a salesman. \u00a0When someone asks you to recommend a service that isn&#8217;t related to your industry, that means there is a high level of trust that&#8217;s involved.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who knows me, or has dealt with me knows that I&#8217;m a firm believer of &#8216;<em><strong>intent precedes content<\/strong><\/em>.&#8217; \u00a0Heck, \u00a0I even wrote an\u00a0<strong><a title=\"9 Marketing Tips For Facebook and Twitter (If You\u2019re Sincere)\" href=\"\/9-marketing-tips-for-facebook-and-twitter-if-youre-sincere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0about being sincere with your\u00a0<strong>social media<\/strong>. \u00a0Everything I do for my clients is based on some\u00a0<strong>level of sincerity<\/strong>. \u00a0If I&#8217;m doing a project and you get billed for 4 hours, chances are I really spent 5 hours on it.<\/p>\n<p>When I create packages, they&#8217;re for the same reason. \u00a0I created a package called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/goingsocialnj.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Going Social Media Package<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Because I saw a bunch of small mom &amp; pop shops who just had a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facebook.com\/iheartblankllc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Facebook Page<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and weren&#8217;t utilizing all the other great social media websites out there that could potentially help their business. \u00a0I asked a few businesses why they didn&#8217;t have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iheartblankllc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/i-heart-blank-llc-hackettstown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Yelp<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0account and the reply was that they either didn&#8217;t have time to &#8216;<em>do<\/em>&#8216; it, or that they didn&#8217;t want to spend the time &#8216;<em>learning<\/em>&#8216; it\u00a0<i>or\u00a0<\/i>setting it up. \u00a0So, I put together an &#8216;<em>easily\u00a0digestible<\/em>&#8216; package with the tagline: &#8220;<em>Get signed up, set up and submitted to the top social media sites.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All this has to do with intent. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t build\u00a0<strong>Going Social<\/strong>\u00a0with the intent to make money. \u00a0I built it because I&#8217;m signing up for those social media&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>all the time\u00a0<\/strong>when I&#8217;m building websites and I thought it might be a good service that I can offer as a sweet, little package for business owners. \u00a0I\u00a0<strong>wasn&#8217;t<\/strong>\u00a0sitting in a dark, smoke filled room with one desk lamp on wondering how I could get rip people off and make loads of money with a sweet marketing ploy.<\/p>\n<h2>Get People Rooting For You!<\/h2>\n<p>I remember years ago, my former band played its biggest show ever at\u00a0<strong>The\u00a0Welmont Theater<\/strong>. \u00a0We opened for some friends who\u00a0<em>&#8216;made it&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0and we were really honored to be playing. \u00a0After the show, we got an onslaught of messages from people wanting to play with us. \u00a0Most of them were just because we knew the &#8216;bigger&#8217; band and thought if they played with us they might be able to meet them. \u00a0Most of the time I had to reply to these people and ask,\u00a0<em>&#8220;Are you really sure? \u00a0We really just play in front of 20 people. \u00a0We&#8217;re not a big deal and you&#8217;re\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0going to meet the headlining band.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em>There was one\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thescandalsnj.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dood<\/a>\u00a0that sent us a message and actually seemed real sincere, so I checked out his band. \u00a0They had a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/UhkMu1oeLmU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a>\u00a0and they were actually really good. \u00a0So, we put them on a show. \u00a0They blew us away and were so appreciative that we\u00a0<em>&#8216;hooked them up.&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Then I found out the singer (at that time) was 20 years old. \u00a0I was\u00a0<strong>blown away<\/strong>\u00a0and felt like more people needed to see this band! \u00a0We helped to get them a few more shows and hooked them up with some bands we thought they would fit with. \u00a0Over the past three years, we&#8217;ve become real good friends and I would do anything in my power to help them on their path. \u00a0They&#8217;re sincere. \u00a0They offer something\u00a0sincere. \u00a0If they played amazing music, but were cocky and arrogant&#8230;I wouldn&#8217;t have given them the time of day.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, when I first started my\u00a0<strong>radio sales job<\/strong>, my former boss confronted me with something similar. \u00a0I was totally\u00a0<em>&#8216;wet behind the ears,&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0but my boss said there&#8217;s something to be said about that. \u00a0He said that I was\u00a0<strong>eager to learn<\/strong>\u00a0and if I was\u00a0<strong>sociable<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>confident<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>knowledgable<\/strong>\u00a0then people would start\u00a0<strong>rooting for me<\/strong>. \u00a0That I was young and\u00a0ambitious\u00a0and people would want to see me succeed. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t totally comfortable with it, but my first contract was &#8216;sold&#8217; after a business owner asked if his business would be my first contract. \u00a0I said &#8216;<em>yes<\/em>,&#8217; and he said\u00a0<em>&#8220;I want to be your first contract&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and signed it. \u00a0I proved to him over time that I knew what I was doing, but it was a nice feeling that someone wanted to see me succeed, after only sitting with them for two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Your business is the same way. \u00a0Whether you&#8217;re young or not, people form an emotional connection to believe they like (obviously) and they will root for you. \u00a0If you&#8217;re\u00a0sincere\u00a0then\u00a0people\u00a0will do everything in their power to make sure you succeed. \u00a0But there&#8217;s gotta be a mutual respect&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>Intent &amp; Mutual Respect<\/h2>\n<p>In the beginning was\u00a0<strong>mutual respect<\/strong>. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t care about your customers then how do you expect them to root for you and\u00a0<strong>help you succeed<\/strong>!?<\/p>\n<p>One time, when I was in a band, I went to a local venue\/bar on a night when no one I knew was playing. \u00a0I wanted to see what bands were like when I didn&#8217;t know who they are or I had no connection to them. \u00a0I remember watching these 21-year-old kids with their giant expensive Marshall stacks playing a real amazing set. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t my style of music at all but the singer kept his voice on point the whole set and the band was really tight. \u00a0I turned to the sound guy, Gabe and asked him,\u00a0<em>&#8220;What the hell is going on here. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t anywhere nearly that good when I was 21. \u00a0Hell, I&#8217;m not that good now? \u00a0Why are there 80 people in this basement when we play and there&#8217;s 20 kids here for this show?&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 Gabe in his infinite wisdom turned and said that we had a totally different attitude. \u00a0He said that when we play we still show respect to the venue and it&#8217;s significance in the &#8216;underground music scene,&#8217; and that these kids really &#8216;expect&#8217; to be there. \u00a0I was kinda blown away, but then he dropped the real bomb that got me thinking. \u00a0He said,\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;These kids play music to be in a band. \u00a0You are in a band to play music.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Wow. \u00a0 That little difference in intention made all the difference.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to test the theory, and I really wanted to hear if their &#8216;sound&#8217; translated to disc so, when they were done, I asked one of the guys if they had any demos. \u00a0He simply replied that he &#8216;thinks they&#8217;re on the table&#8217; and walked away. \u00a0After that, I figured\u00a0<em>&#8220;Screw it. \u00a0If he doesn&#8217;t wanna take the time to talk to someone he doesn&#8217;t know who appreciated what he wasn&#8217;t doing, then I don&#8217;t need the demo.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Your business is the same way. \u00a0I\u00a0<strong>hate\u00a0<\/strong>going into a store and asking someone if they have a\u00a0particular\u00a0product and hearing their\u00a0sentence\u00a0start with,\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;I think&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0It&#8217;s the absolute\u00a0<strong>worst<\/strong>. \u00a0If I&#8217;m asking you a\u00a0<strong>question<\/strong>, that means I want an\u00a0<strong>answer<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;I think&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0isn&#8217;t going to cut it. \u00a0You&#8217;re suppose to be the\u00a0knowledgeable\u00a0professional! \u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;I think&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0usually\u00a0precedes\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;over the &#8216;whatever&#8217; isle\/section&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and I usually do an about-face and walk out of the store. \u00a0If your job is to\u00a0<strong>help customers<\/strong>&#8230;then\u00a0<strong>help them<\/strong>! \u00a0<strong>Don&#8217;t<\/strong>\u00a0give them your best guess! \u00a0If you don&#8217;t\u00a0<strong>care<\/strong>\u00a0about helping your customers then your customers won&#8217;t expect to be helped&#8230;and really won&#8217;t care about coming back to your store.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>I wish I could become friends with all my clients. \u00a0I wish I had the time and energy. \u00a0I enjoy the\u00a0occasions\u00a0when I do get to work for people who are my friends. \u00a0They know they&#8217;re going to be taken care of and I enjoy helping them make their businesses successful. \u00a0This is my outlook every time I get a new client. \u00a0I treat them as if they were a good friend of mine. \u00a0I hope you&#8217;re treating your customer&#8217;s with the same respect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I started writing this article and I went on so many different &#8216;side rants&#8217; that I decided to break them up into a &#8216;series&#8217; of posts about how closely knit being in a band is with &#8216;the business world.&#8217; \u00a0Here&#8217;s part two&#8230; (Go\u00a0here\u00a0for part one) Let&#8217;s Talk About Music You know there&#8217;s a few interactions I&#8217;ve had over the past few weeks that got me thinking about my\u00a0business relationships. \u00a0It started, as usual, over music. \u00a0Music, and the business of music, is the most honest form of business. \u00a0Mostly because it&#8217;s not considered a &#8216;real&#8216; business.
