I thought I would share\u00a0some tips<\/strong> and tricks<\/strong> for ‘pimping out’<\/em> your resume<\/strong>. \u00a0I thought I’d go through a number of topics to help you improve your resume<\/strong>. \u00a0Let’s get started! \u00a0There’s a lot here so make sure you take notes or save the links!<\/p>\n

Stress Your Talents…Make Sure It’s Not Just One!<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Let’s start at the beginning. \u00a0If you want a fantastic resume<\/strong> you should really have something fantastic<\/strong> to put on it. \u00a0A recent article from Lifehacker<\/strong><\/a> titled “If You Want a Good Job, You Need More Than One Talent”<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>provides some great tips<\/strong> and foresight<\/strong> into getting a leg up on your next job. \u00a0They stress that companys are looking for varied<\/strong>, multi-talented<\/strong> new employee’s. \u00a0If you think about it, they’re right. \u00a0With the unemployment rates,<\/strong> employers are looking for individuals with a variety of skills<\/strong>, not<\/strong> just a core skill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Top 10 Most Used ‘Professional’ Words In 2012!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Last year LinkedIn<\/strong><\/a> posted the “Top 10 Overused Professional Buzzwords 2012 [INFOGRAPHIC]<\/a>.”<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0It’s pretty funny. \u00a0You might want to think of taking some out if you use an abundance of them. \u00a0They include Creative<\/strong><\/em>, Organizational<\/strong><\/em>, Effective<\/strong><\/em>, Motivated<\/strong><\/em>, Extensive Experience<\/strong><\/em>, Track Record<\/strong><\/em>, Innovative<\/strong><\/em>, Responsible<\/strong><\/em>, Analytical<\/strong><\/em> and Problem Solving<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Leave Old Job Descriptions Off Your Resume!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I know it may sound weird, but Mashable<\/strong><\/a> actually has a better idea in their article “4 Things to Leave Off Your Resume.”<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Mashable<\/strong> suggests putting your accomplishments<\/strong> under your ‘Experience Section’<\/em> rather then a job description<\/strong>. \u00a0Totally makes sense too. \u00a0Why would you tell someone what you did<\/strong> when you can tell them what you’ve accomplished<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Use Hobbies In Your ‘Skills’ Section!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the article titled “Include Personal Projects On Resumes When You\u2019re Just Starting Out”<\/strong><\/em><\/a> Lifehacker<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reminds ‘us’ that the ‘Skills’<\/strong> section of your resume isn’t just for work-related stuff…especially when you’re starting out with your first (or second) resume. \u00a0If you can relate some outside skill<\/strong> you have to your job then you’ll help your chances. \u00a0It also relates to the whole idea of ‘stressing your multi-talents<\/a>.’<\/p>\n

Target The Job You’re Applying For!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Another Lifehacker<\/a> article titled “How to Generate More Interviews with Your Resume”<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>highlights some of the things you can do to catch the eye<\/strong> of your potential employer. \u00a0Not many people realize this, but you shouldn’t just have one resume you send out to all your potential employers. \u00a0Each one should be tailored<\/strong> to each job you’re applying for. \u00a0The three important ones are:<\/p>\n

  1. Insert the EXACT TITLE of the position you’re applying for right at the start of the resume<\/li>\n
  2. Develop an opening paragraph that highlights why you’d be a great fit<\/li>\n
  3. Create a “Core Competencies” section<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Never use a pre-defined resume template. Instead, make your own exceptional template for your resume that is attractive and easy to edit
      \n<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Use font size of 10-12 points and in Ariel, Verdana or Times New Roman for easier reading<\/li>\n
    3. Write your name in bold, text size should be larger than the body text of the resume<\/li>\n
    4. Your mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address should not be larger or in bold<\/li>\n
    5. Mention your two word name for easier name recognition. You may eliminate your middle or initial name from your resume<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Don’t Forget About ‘Applicant Tracking Systems’<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      Did you know that many employers (or services) actually run your resume through a key-word search before they even think about looking at your resume? \u00a0An article titled “2013 Resumes: Tips You Need To Know To Maximize Yours!”<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0from Commpro<\/strong><\/a> details what you should be doing with your online submitted resume<\/strong> to ensure<\/strong> it actually gets into someone’s hands!\u00a0 Here’s the section on automated tracking systems<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
