Often times when creating or entering a new password, WordPress will determine that they are\u00a0\u2018too weak\u2019 to allow.\u00a0 It can seem random even if you think your password is pretty secure.\u00a0 When it comes down to it, your website should be as secure as possible and will help prevent it to be hacked or come under brute force attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The solution?\u00a0 Make sure you’re are using secure, strong passwords. \u00a0I’ve also come across some passwords that seem strong, but are considered \u2018weak\u2019 by the algorithm WordPress uses.<\/p>\n

There are a few reasons for this. \u00a0Wordpress is using Dropbox\u2019s\u00a0zxcvbn library<\/a>\u00a0to help determine the strength of passwords. \u00a0Therefore, it is using a smarter system that ensures stronger passwords. \u00a0Here are a few examples of how a password may get a \u2018too weak\u2019 rating:<\/p>\n

Passwords that use \u2018l33k speak\u2019 (ie. using a 3 for an \u2018e\u2019, 1 for \u2018i\u2019, etc. \/ having your password be \u201cG00dm0rn1ng\u201d) or if WordPress perceives it as l33k speak it may come back as \u2018too weak.\u2019<\/p>\n

Passwords may also get a \u2018too weak\u2019 rating based on the password\u2019s entropy. \u00a0This has to do with patterns of a password and how many times a password can be broken down (and therefore hacked faster.) \u00a0It\u2019s a little too long to get into here, but\u00a0here\u2019s an article<\/a>\u00a0if you want to read more about the zxcvbn library and WordPress password algorithm.<\/p>\n

What are your password options?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After determining that we are going to enforce the use of WordPress-level strong passwords, this only leads us to two options.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. An administrator of the site can \u2018overwrite\u2019 a password of any strength. \u00a0If you\u00a0determine it is \u2018strong enough,\u2019 you can change your password.<\/li>\n
  2. You can use various tricks to create a stronger password. \u00a0Sometimes it can be as simple as adding an extra character, capitalizing or using a variation on l33k speak. \u00a0For your convenience, we\u2019ve compiled a list below of links to help you create a strong password that you can remember.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Other Tips \/ Tricks For Making A Password Secure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    There are some fun, easy ways to make your password secure while making it complicated and long.\u00a0 Most of the time we have simple passwords because we can remember them.\u00a0 Unfortunately, most of the time, if we can remember them then they can come under scrutiny with a brute force attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Password From A\u00a0Sentence<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    People are much better at remembering sentences and song lyrics than they are remembering random letters, numbers, and symbols. One trick to creating a strong password is to take the first letter of every word in a long and memorable sentence and then add upper and lower case letters, numbers and a few symbols to produce your password.<\/p>\n

    Are you a fan of the Beatles? Then try this: \u201cYesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away \/ Now it looks as though they\u2019re here to stay \/ Oh, I believe in yesterday\u201d, which in password form converts to \u201cY,amtssfa\/Nilatt\u2019h2s\/O,Ibiy\u201d. Simple enough, right?<\/p>\n

    Another good example of this trick is to use a personal statement such as \u201cDon\u2019t forget, your wedding anniversary is on October 3rd!\u201d. The password then becomes \u201cDf,ywaioO3rd!\u201d. There are endless ways to build highly secure and easy to remember passwords using this trick.<\/p>\n

    Your keyboard is a blank canvas, ready to help you create your strongest password yet. Draw patterns meaningful to you across the keyboard, including letter and numbers (using your imagination, not permanent marker). The shapes could be your initials, your first name, or a geometrical shape like your favorite constellation to create your password of choice.<\/p>\n
